Sleeping Beauty – 2011 film

The first thing I thought when I see the title of this movie before watched it was some kind of twist of brother Grimm’s fairy tale that booming this time. But its not. Sleeping Beauty is  a 2011 Australian drama film, written and directed by Julia Leigh and stared by Emily brown, based in part on the novel The House of the Sleeping Beauties by Nobel laureate Yasunari Kawabata.

The film potraying a young university student named Lucy who had multiple part time jobs; volunteers as test subject at medical research lab, works at a coffee shop, make copies at an office and felt those were not enough, she responded a job ads on the paper and got interviewed by Clara who offer her to be some kind of maid that servings dinner party to guess in lingerie. After a session as serving maid, Lucy got contacted by Clara’s assistant for another job. She took it and driven to a country mansion. Clara always asked her to get bath first  before given drink of some kind of tea and then she fell into deep sleep. Lucy who was in deep sleep state, put in a large bed and Clara lead an old mad in to the room. After Clara reminded the man of no-penetration rule, she left them and the old man began to strip Lucy from the bed sheet and caresses her body and cuddled up next to her. Having no clue of what happened, Lucy began to wonder and finally intended to find what happened while she fell asleep.

 

I dont wanna lie by saying I understood this movie, some scenes made me confused; the scene Lucy burn the money she got from Clara’s first pay- the money she desperately need; her relation with birdmann;  and the last scene when she become hysterical when she woke up from her sleep and found her ‘sleep mate’ die beside her, in my opinion this scene could be seen as the kiss that wakes up Sleeping Beauty from her sleep, potrayed by Clara who gave Lucy CPR to wake her up.

Though I got confused, and the art style is somewhat of simplicity, I found this movie is pretty in a way. Lucy is dark, emotionless, mysterious and beautiful and like sleeping beauty, she need the kiss to wake her up from her dream land.

I have to warn you that this movie is rated adult for showing naked bodies and the ‘sleep mate’ made Lucy’s sleep naked body as their plaything and did some kinky things to her but dont expect more erotic scene than that.
